Clinton and Rubio Visit Alabama, Crimson Tide Preps for SEC Championship

Hillary Clinton

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton will be in Alabama today to mark the 60th anniversary of the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

Clinton will be speaking at 11 a.m. this morning at the Dexter Avenue King Memorial Baptist Church in Montgomery. The church was pastored by the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. during the boycott.

Clinton’s speech falls on the anniversary of Rosa Parks' arrest for refusing to give her bus seat to a white passenger on December 1, 1955. Her arrest sparked a 381-day boycott of Montgomery buses to protest segregated seating.

During her time in the South, the Democratic presidential front-runner has been working to solidify her advantage among African-American voters.

Black voters make up a major portion of the Democratic primary electorate in Southern states holding early primaries in 2016.

Marco Rubio

Presidential candidate Senator Marco Rubio will be making a number of stops in Alabama today. Rubio will be holding a public rally in Guntersville this afternoon at the town's Recreation Center. Then, later in the day, he will be in Birmingham for a private fundraiser.

Bill Armistead is the Co-Chairman for the Rubio campaign in Alabama and he says the Florida Senator will be discussing issues that are concerning Americans, including national security.

“He does not believe that we should just open the borders and let people come in from the south or come in from Syria so I think that will be a major topic that’s on everyone’s mind right now.”

Armistead adds that Alabama will be an important state in next year’s primary as it will be the 5th state to hold a primary on March 1st.

#2 Alabama is working on a game plan for this weekend’s Southeastern Conference Championship game against Florida.

The Crimson Tide clinched the SEC Western Division Saturday with a 29-13 win over Auburn in the Iron Bowl.

Coach Nick Saban says the first step of a successful season was winning the SEC West, and now his team gets another chance to play for a Conference Championship.

“This is something that we still feel is very, very important and something that’s a significant accomplishment because of the quality of our league and winning our division and having an opportunity to play against a really good Florida team.”

The #18 Florida Gators are 10-2 on the season. They won the SEC Eastern Division with a 7-1 conference record. Kickoff is set for 3 p.m. at the Georgia Dome on CBS.

An Athens-based rehabilitation and senior care facility will be required to pay more than $165,000 in back wages and damages for failing to pay its workers overtime.

The U.S. Department of Labor says Athens Rehab and SeniorCare violated the overtime and record keeping terms of the U.S. Fair Labor Standards Act by requiring employees to start work before their shifts began. The company didn't record the work until the first minute of their scheduled shift start time. As a result, employees were not paid for work prior to their shifts.

The department also says Athens Rehab incorrectly classified two salaried maintenance workers as "exempt" from overtime.

Athens Rehab will be required to pay back wages of over $80,000, plus liquidated damages, for a total of over $165,000, to 237 employees.

Athens Rehab has not yet commented on the Department of Labor violations.
