Clinton on Montgomery Bus Boycott, 60th Anniversary, Rubio visits Alabama

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton was in Alabama today to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Montgomery bus boycott.

Clinton stood in the pulpit where the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. led the boycott, saying the U.S. is still plagued by injustices such as mass incarceration, an epidemic of gun violence and attempts to roll back voting rights.

Reaching out to black voters, Clinton spoke on the anniversary of Rosa Parks' Dec. 1, 1955 arrest for refusing to give her bus seat to a white passenger.      Parks' arrest sparked the 381-day boycott of Montgomery buses by blacks to protest segregated seating.

Clinton says the U.S. must have an honest conversation "about the larger and deeper inequalities that continue to exist across our country."

The arrest of Parks led Doctor King Junior organizing the Montgomery Bus Boycott.

The Rosa Parks Museum in Montgomery has complimentary admission for visitors today.

Dr. Felicia Bell is the Director of the Rosa Parks Museum. She says that Rosa Parks’ attorney, Fred Gray participated in a field trip for students.

“Mr. Gray will be participating in the Alabama Public Television electronic field trip, it’s a virtual field trip, but we have invited local 8th graders to come to the museum to the auditorium to participate in a live webcast where they will ask panelists about the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the Civil Rights Movement.”

The museum will feature rare artifacts that include Rosa Parks’ original fingerprint from her arrest and a 1955-era Montgomery city bus.

Presidential candidate Senator Marco Rubio will be making a number of stops in Alabama today.

Rubio held a public rally in Guntersville this afternoon at the town's Recreation Center. He’s in Birmingham for a fundraiser.

Bill Armistead is the Co-Chairman for the Rubio campaign in Alabama and he says the Florida Senator will be discussing issues that are concerning Americans including national security…

“He does not believe that we should just open the borders and let people come in from the south or come in from Syria so I think that will be a major topic that’s on everyone’s mind right now.”

Armistead adds that Alabama will be an important state in next year’s primary as it will be the 5th state to hold a primary on March 1st.
