Gay Marriage Bill, Journey for Justice March

Alabama lawmakers are considering legislation to take the state out of the marriage business in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court decision legalizing gay marriage.

The House Judiciary Committee on Monday voted for a bill to do away with state-issued marriage licenses. Instead, couples would bring in a signed marriage contract and file it with the probate office.

The change would prevent probate judges who oppose same-sex marriage from having to sign licenses for gay couples. A few Alabama counties have shut down marriage license operations altogether rather than issue licenses to gay couples.

Legislators could approve the bill this week. However, it requires a two-thirds vote to pass because it's outside the governor's call for the special session focused on budget measures.

Fifty Years after civil rights activists marched from Selma to Montgomery another journey is taking place. A-P-R student reporter Taylor Swinney has more…

The NAACP and members of the Jewish Community are marching to bring attention to current civil rights issues. The NAACP’s Journey for Justice March will end tomorrow in Washington DC following a 40 day trek from Selma.

Jewish Rabbis are participating by taking turns carrying a twenty pound Torah along as a sign for the journey. The march began last month, barely a full year after the shooting death of Michael Brown in Ferguson Missouri.

The journey is also to help remember the march Dr. Martin Luther King Junior and other civil rights activists took from Selma to Montgomery for voting rights fifty years ago.

Dunkin’ Donuts franchises are continuing to pop up throughout the state of Alabama.

If you’ve ever thought about getting into the donut business—a seminar will be held at the Birmingham Business Alliance tonight for information on franchise opportunities.

Patrick Cunningham is the senior director of franchising for Dunkin’ Donuts.  He says the opportunities with his company are unlike any other.

“Our success is attributed and on the backs of our franchisees. When they’re successful, we are successful, and the fact we are nearly one hundred percent franchise really gives us the opportunities to support our franchisees in the right way. Want to learn more about our franchise? Go to www.dunkinfranchising.com.”

The seminar will be held this evening from 6 to 7 PM.
