speaking of pets

  • A pet should not be a surprise gift, but there are ways to help someone get a new pet; one gift this year might be a donation to help the pet victims of the tornadoes in Kentucky and five other states.
  • The American Kennel Club reports that around Thanksgiving, there is an increase in pet visits to veterinarians because the animals were given “unsafe human foods.” Make healthy food choices for your pet over the holiday to insure all family members have a happy Thanksgiving!
  • Some people see an animal shelter as a sad, dreary place full of unwanted (or undesirable) pets. In fact, a shelter is a haven for pets who find themselves without any home. The shelter offers them a place where they can be fed, cared for, and maybe find a new home with an owner who will love and care for them. That’s something we can all be thankful for, as we celebrate National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week...
  • Twice a year, we all have to reset our internal clocks - and our watches, and clocks, and microwaves - to accommodate Daylight Savings Time. We know that it messes with our internal clocks and sleep schedules, but have you ever considered what effect the time change has on our pets?
  • When giving your pet a treat, pumpkin is a great option. It is full of nutrients and fiber. Fresh pumpkin has a higher water content than canned pumpkin, but in moderation, both are a healthy choice for your furry friend...
  • Everyone likes to hear a story, and that includes shelter dogs. They are often shy, scared, in a strange place, and many respond positively when a child reads to them. In fact, it can make them more adoptable. And as it turns out, the dogs are not the only ones who benefit.
  • October is Adopt-a-Dog Month, a great time to add a new member to your family. You will save a dog’s life, and improve your own, when you take home one of these faithful companions to be your new best friend.
  • Most black-and-tan Coonhounds have long silky ears, but as you might guess, some are longer than others. As it turns out, Paige Olsen’s Coonhound, “Lou,” has ears that are so long, Guinness World Records has added her to their new World Records Book for having the longest ears of any living dog!
  • This year is the 15th World Rabies Day, a time to focus on facts about rabies, and to dispel myths or misconceptions about this deadly virus. The date was chosen because it is the anniversary of the death of Louis Pasteur, who created the first successful vaccine against rabies.
  • Snuggling with a pet is what makes us feel so close to our furry friends. However, in a time of COVID, if you think you may have the virus, you are putting your best friend at risk by getting too close.
