Alabama – American flag displays, memorials and prayerful tributes across Alabama will mark today's second anniversary of the September 11th attacks - - a day for remembering fallen heroes and the innocents who died that terrible day.
Johnny Spann of Winfield believes the activities calender for this unofficial Patriot Day should be kept full. He's the father of Johnny Michael Spann, the C-I-A officer who was the first American killed by the enemy in the war on terrorism in Afghanistan. Spann worries that lack of anniversary activities may signify that Americans are becoming complacent.
Governor Bob Riley observed a moment of silence at 7:46 a.m., the time the attacks began, and will recite the Pledge of Allegiance at noon today. Riley also ordered flags on state government offices lowered to half-staff.
Though the list of Alabama events isn't as long as last year, people haven't forgotten the thousands of lives lost in the attacks.
Today's schedule of events around Alabama includes a noon service at Government Street United Methodist Church in Mobile,
where the Reverend Rob Gulledge said the community needs to "pause and remember those who lost their lives."
