Montgomery, AL – Alabama's demographic profile continues to change. Census data show the number of non-family households in the state surpassed the traditional type of two-parents-and-children during the 1990s. Less than a quarter of Alabama's one-point-seven million households include a married couple with children. The number of residents choosing to live alone or with unmarried partners has increased. Most of those non-family households are single-person residences, and more than a third of those living alone were at least 65 years old. The 2000 census shows un-related people living together comprises about 30 percent of Alabama households. Officials say the change shows Alabama is catching up to a national trend that has occurred over past few decades.
