Brewton, AL – Residents in Escambia County are voting on a proposed 10-mill property tax increase today that would help fund local schools.
Supporters of the tax say they're trying to protect academic and extracurricular programs, including high school football. But opponents say the county has enough taxes and that school officials should be more accountable for the money they already have.
The new tax is projected to generate more than 2-point-8 million dollars. 23 percent of that would go to Brewton City Schools. 77 percent would go to Escambia County schools.
