Montgomery, AL – The House Constitution and Elections Committee has approved a constitutional amendment that would remove any immunity legislators may have from being arrested for speeding, drunken driving or other crimes. The bill would remove language from the state constitution that gives legislators such immunity. The committee also passed a bill that would repeal a 1959 law that says police officers can be fined for arresting a lawmaker in some situations. The constitutional amendment would have to be approved in a statewide referendum.
