Birmingham, AL – A study published Friday in the journal Science suggests the virus that causes AIDS may be most vulnerable to vaccines in the earliest stages of infection. Researchers with the University of Alabama at Birmingham collected the information at U-A-B's research clinic in Zambia. During a five-year period, researchers found eight new H-I-V infections in early stages. Scientists also discovered the new viruses were different from those found in people who had been infected for years. The research suggests low levels of antibodies could effectively fight H-I-V infections if properly targeted and timed.
