Montgomery, AL – Cigarettes and other tobacco products will be more expensive in Montgomery. The city council approved a new tax Thursday. It will raise the cigarette tax from two cents to 12 cents per pack. The council also decided to collect a ten percent tax per item on other tobacco products. The Montgomery City Council was responding to a legislative proposal to limit the amount local governments can tax cigarettes. The new taxes could generate more than one million dollars in revenue, and council members immediately began debating how the funds should be spent. They agreed to use the money on capital improvement projects.
