Opelika Opposes Atlanta Dumping

By Alabama Public Radio

Opelika, AL – The Opelika City Council is opposing a petition that would allow the Salem landfill to accept garbage from Georgia's largest city. A subsidiary of Waste Management, Waste Away, asked the Lee County Commission earlier this month to approve a request to bring in as many as 100 truckloads of garbage a day from Atlanta. But Opelika councilors unanimously approved a resolution Tuesday night urging the commission to say no. The Lee County Commission will hold its next meeting August 30th. It has not taken action on the petition. Waste Away already accepts 15-hundred tons of trash daily. That includes garbage from 19 Alabama counties and three Georgia counties. The company wants to expand the daily capacity to 25-hundred tons.
