Shelby Concerned About Fort McClellan Cleanup

By Alabama Public Radio

Washington, D.C. – U.S. Senator Richard Shelby says the Army should respond immediately to allegations that a California contractor concealed unexploded ordnance during the cleanup of Fort McClellan. The Tuscaloosa Republican outlined his concerns in a letter to Acting Army Secretary Les Brownlee. The letter was in response to allegations that contractor Tetra Tech-Foster Wheeler hid the unexploded ordnance that it found at the former Army base instead of destroying the weapons. Shelby says the contractor's actions severely damaged the confidence of state regulators and the local community. Tetra Tech's president and C-E-O, Sam Box, says the firm is working closely with the Army and state regulatory agencies to resolve the issue and move ahead with the McClellan project.
