Shelby, Spann Oppose Lindh's Release

By Alabama Public Radio

Washington, DC – U-S Senator Richard Shelby has written letters to the White House and the U-S Justice Department. They say John Walker Lindh should serve his full prison term. The senator is opposing a request to commute Lindh's 20-year prison sentence. He was sentenced to prison two years ago for assisting the Taliban in Afghanistan. He was in the same Afghan prison where C-I-A agent Mike Spann was killed. Spann's father, Johnny Spann of Winfield, also opposes the request. He says commuting Lindh's sentence would be "a slap in the face" to his son and others who were killed fighting the Taliban.
