Mass Transit Plan Heading to Legislature

By Alabama Public Radio

Birmingham, AL – A proposed plan to increase funding for mass transit would have Jefferson County residents paying more for car tags. County legislators say they'll introduce a plan in the upcoming regular session that would increase the vehicle registration fees and raise $40 million for a mass transit system. Supporters of the plan say a better funded system could link Birmingham with nearby communities. If approved by lawmakers, the plan would also have to go to the voters in Jefferson County. A similar proposal died in the state Legislature last year.
