Federal Judge Delays Arguments in Scrushy Trial

By Alabama Public Radio

Birmingham, AL – U-S District Judge Karon Bowdre has delayed closing arguments in the fraud trial of former HealthSouth C-E-O Richard Scrushy. Attorneys were expected to wrap of the case on Monday. But Bowdre has pushed back closing arguments until Wednesday, meaning jury deliberations could begin Thursday. The judge says both sides needed more time to prepare. During Friday's hearing, Bowdre also expressed anger over a Wall Street Journal report. It cited two unnamed lawyers familiar with the case speaking about the reason for the dismissal of a juror last month. Bowdre asked all attorneys to stand, give their names and state whether they were the source for the story or if they knew who the source was. Everyone said they did not. Bowdre says an investigation into the unauthorized release will continue.
