Attorneys Close Scrushy Trial

By Alabama Public Radio

Birmingham, AL – Attorneys made their closing arguments Wednesday in the criminal trial of former HealthSouth C-E-O Richard Scrushy. The defense says he's innocent and blame the two-point-seven billion dollar fraud on the company's former finance chief. Bill Owens and 14 other former executives have pleaded guilty in the case and have testified against Scrushy. Defense attorney Art Leach also described the government's conspiracy plot as "insane." Prosecutors, of course, painted a different picture. U-S Attorney Alice Martin asked jurors to convict Scrushy, saying he is "master manipulator" who used others to orchestrate the fraud. The case is expected to go to the jury Thursday morning.
