Scrushy Jurors Consider Complicated Documents

By Alabama Public Radio

Birmingham, AL – The jury considering the case against former HealthSouth C-E-O Richard Scrushy will resume deliberations Tuesday. They're dealing with some complicated documents, primarily their instruction manual. The verdict form and legal instructions apparently have left them confused. Jurors have passed handwritten notes to Federal Judge Karon Bowdre asking for clarifications. The legal instructions about how to reach a verdict are 78 pages long. If jurors reach a verdict on all 36 counts, they must fill out a form that includes 247 questions. To acquit Scrushy, jurors must make at least 36 unanimous decisions. Experts say much of the information on the forms is required by law.
