Five Chickens Hit With EEE, West Nile

By Alabama Public Radio

Baldwin County, AL – Baldwin County officials say five chickens have tested positive for mosquito-borne diseases. Four tested positive for Eastern Equine Encephalitis, and one tested positive for West Nile virus. State officials say two cases of West Nile were also found in horses in Saint Clair County. Officials say there's a chance the results could be false positives. But they're still urging people to take precautions by wearing light colors, long sleeves and pants. Mosquito-borne illnesses can be spread to humans by mosquitoes that feed on infected birds and then bite humans. Officials say the large amount of rain in April could have contributed to an increased mosquito population.
