Shoals Woman Makes Medical History

By Alabama Public Radio

Muscle Shoals, AL – A woman from Muscle Shoals has made medical history by becoming the country's first woman to have a child after undergoing an ovary transplant. 25-year-old Stephanie Yarber gave birth to a seven pound, 15 ounce baby girl Monday night. Her sister, Melanie Morgan, donated the ovarian tissue that was transplanted into Yarber. An infertility specialist in St. Louis performed the transplant in April of last year. Yarber became pregnant five months later. She needed help getting pregnant because she became menopausal at age 14. She tried in vitro fertilization twice with eggs donated by her sister, but those efforts were unsuccessful. The specialist who performed her surgery says he has now repeated the procedure on two other sets of identical twins.
