Historian Hopes Web Project Will Help State

By Alabama Public Radio

Auburn, AL – A noted Alabama historian will be leading an effort to reshape the state's image. Wayne Flynt is a distinguished professor of history at Auburn University. He's editor-in-chief of a large-scale Internet project called Encyclopedia of Alabama. It's being done with support from the Alabama Humanities Foundation and could be online by 2007. Flynt says the World Wide Web too often exhibits less than flattering news about the state, such as its segregationist history and its political demagogues. He says the online encyclopedia will feature 12 content areas and hundreds of entries on a variety of topics. Flynt says he believes the encyclopedia will boost to Alabama's image.
