Fairhope Bicyclist, Safety Activist Killed

By Alabama Public Radio

Fairhope, AL – A Fairhope man was killed while riding his bicycle when a motorist hit him Monday morning. Family members say the tragedy is especially difficult because Larry McDuff lost his wife in 2003 when she was hit by a car while biking. The 65-year-old was struck Monday by a hit-and-run driver. Authorities did recover the vehicle they believe hit McDuff, and the vehicle's 17-year-old driver later contacted police. His name is being withheld because he is a juvenile. McDuff's wife, Ann, was killed while she was riding on Highway 27 in Baldwin County. After that accident, he avoided rural two-lane roads like the one where his wife died. McDuff also wore a reflective shirt that he wore whenever he rode and worked to promote bicycle safety and awareness throughout Baldwin County.
