Blobfest: A Running Event for a Small-Town Theater

Each year, the people of Phoenixville, Pa., commemorate the 1958 cult horror classic that was filmed in their town.

In The Blob, which starred a young Steve McQueen, a town is terrorized by a growing, alien gelatinous mass that consumes everything in its path and happens to be remarkable at clearing a room.

Scott Simon talks with Shane Stone, festival organizer of the sixth annual BlobFest, about the event and the film's importance to the town. The festival will feature a "Running Out Re-Enactment," in which up to 500 people stream out of the town's Colonial Theatre in mock horror. Also on the schedule: a scream contest, a costume contest, street fair and an auction of, among other items, the theater's original front doors.
