Judge Sentences Harris to Death

By Alabama Public Radio

Luverne, AL – Westley Devon Harris has been sentenced to death. Crenshaw County Circuit Judge Ed McFerrin decided to override a jury's recommendation of life in prison without parole. Attorney General Troy King had encouraged the judge to disregard the jury's decision and impose the death penalty. But McFerrin says it was not an easy decision because of his own personal beliefs. Harris was convicted of killing six members of his former girlfriend's family in 2002. Some authorities consider it the worst shooting homicide in recent state history.
