FOP Asks for Death Penalty

By Alabama Public Radio

Birmingham, AL – The Fraternal Order of Police has asked Jefferson County Circuit Judge Tommy Nail to sentence Kerry Spencer to death. Spencer was convicted of killing three Birmingham police officers last year, but the jury recommended life without parole. The Fraternal Order of Police unanimously approved the resolution at its recent national conference. It was hand-delivered to the judge, who will sentence Spencer on Friday. He was convicted in June for killing Officers Carlos Owen, Harley Chisholm the Third and Charles Robert Bennett. A second man, Nathaniel Woods, has also been charged in the same case. His trial will begin in October.
