Dauphin Island, AL – The U-S Geological Survey reports Hurricane Katrina caused significant damage on Dauphin Island. The storm moved part of the island toward the main land and also cut a mile-wide canal through the island's western tip. Katrina swept away or damaged more than 100 vacation homes on the western end of the island. The eastern side, which is more populated, was spared from the worst damage. Dauphin Island residents met this week with representatives from FEMA and the federal flood insurance program. Many of them are waiting before they rebuild because they have to sort out insurance claims.
