Turtle Regulations Stopped for Shrimpers

By Alabama Public Radio

Mobile, AL – But the temporary reprieve only applies in certain waters off the coasts of Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana. Federal regulators say debris from Hurricane Katrina is clogging the devices, shrimpers are losing catches and turtles aren't being saved anyway. Fishermen will instead be asked to limit their net-towing time to 55 minutes so that trapped turtles can be discovered and released before they drown. Regulators placed the order in effect Monday and it's valid until noon on October 22nd.
