Clinton In Bayou La Batre

By Alabama Public Radio

Bayou Le Batre, AL – Former President Bill Clinton was in storm ravaged Bayou La Batre yesterday. Clinton is touring the Gulf Coast is searching of the best ways to spend 100 million dollars he and former President George Bush helped raise for recovery efforts following Hurricane Katrina. So far, Clinton has promised that money will NOT be tied to politics. Yesterday he also told Bayou Le Batre residents the funds will be used to relieve problems that government can't solve. Many Bayou La Batre residents make their living from the sea, but all 50 local seafood processing plants are no longer operational, and local fishermen don't have the money to buy fuel and put their vessels back to work. City officials also say at least 800 homes were destroyed by flooding. However, only about 8-percent of the local population had flood insurance.
