Montgomery, AL – The Katrina Emergency Tax Relief Act of 2005 will give Alabamians more time to file their taxes. The state Department of Revenue says the recent change in federal law allows filing extensions through February of next year. Hurricane Katrina's victims in Alabama will have until February 28th to file state tax returns and submit payments for other taxes, including individual income, corporate income and business privilege taxes. Late filing and payment penalties will be waived for taxpayers who request the relief. But revenue officials say Alabama's tax laws have no provision allowing interest to be waived. Taxpayers are asked to contact the state if they can't meet their future filing requirements because of storm damage.
