Madison, AL – There were 3,061 votes or 54-point-7 percent opposed to the tax and 2,539 votes or 45-point-3 percent in favor of the increase. The voter turnout was 5,600 or 26 percent of 21,500 eligible. The capital improvement plan would have gone to improve roads, recreation, public safety, drainage and city facilities. If voters had approved the referendum, the property tax on a home with an assessed value of $150,000 would have gone from $815 to $923.
