Montgomery, AL – Public school biology textbooks will continue to display a label that describes evolution as "a controversial theory." The state Board of Education voted Thursday to continue using the disclaimer. There were no disputes about the label at today's meeting. State Superintendent Joe Morton recommended keeping the label and says Alabamians have handled the issue well. He says he wasn't surprised the subject received no public comment during the meeting. Though the textbook committee recommended dozens of science textbooks, it rejected three elementary-level books for containing material on evolution the committee considered controversial for that age group.
