Police Reports Not for Public View but Possibly for Media

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery, AL – The most significant change approved by the Criminal Justice Information Center commission was moving victim's names and phone numbers and details about crimes out of public view on police and sheriff's incident reports, a change opposed by news organizations. But the amendment to the state law enforcement handbook encourages authorities to provide the victim information to news reporters. The amendment still gives law enforcement official discretion to withhold such information. The Criminal Justice Information Center commission's action puts the proposals in line for a final vote in January after a period for public comment.
