Gurney Mine to Open Next Year

By Alabama Public Radio

Montevallo, AL – Walter Industries and its partner, Kodiak Mining, plan have invested 20 million dollars into the mine. They hope to get about 700-thousand tons of coal from the mine next year. Walter Industries plans to sell the coal to power plants, which use it to generate electricity. Walter also plans to sell it to steel companies, which use it to make their products. The mine got its name from the Gurney family, which operated the mine during the Civil War era. It's located off of Shelby County Highway 10 and is 800 feet deep.
