Alabama Drivers License Tests Could Change

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery, AL – Montgomery County Circuit Judge William Shashy says he'll rule next week on whether Alabama should continue offering its drivers license tests in multiple languages. The ruling would come in a lawsuit filed by five people who say Governor Bob Riley and Public Safety Director Mike Coppage aren't doing enough to promote English as the state's official language. They want to the state to stop offering the tests in languages other than English. But the Southern Poverty Law Center says it supports the state's position on the matter ... and that offering the drivers license tests in different languages does not prevent the preservation of English as the state's official language. A ruling is expected by next Friday.
