I-22 Dedicated For Thanksgiving Travel

By Alabama Public Radio

Jasper AL – Another section of Interstate 22 was officially dedicated yesterday. Interstate 22 will eventually bring 4-lanes of roadway that connect Birmingham - Memphis and Atlanta. Yesterday, the ribbon was cut on a section of interstate near Jasper. That 20-mile segment connects State Road 129 in Winfield and ends at Industrial Boulevard in Jasper, and links two previously unconnected sections providing uninterrupted interstate from Jasper to Memphis.
The final section of the roadway will connect Adamsville with I-65 in Birmingham, and is expected to open in 2012. The entire Interstate 22 project will cost around a billion dollars when completed.
The roadway was dedicated just in time for the busiest travel day of the year.
An estimated 37 million people will be travelling this weekend ... including nearly 9 million people in the Southeast. Alabama state troopers are predicting a dangerous holiday period beginning at 6 pm this evening and ending at midnight Sunday. Trooper estimate 18 people could die in accidents across the state.
