Study Shows Gap Between Rich and Poor has Increased

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery, AL – Kimble Forrister is director of Alabama Arise, an advocacy group for Alabama's poorer citizens. He says the study released Thursday by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities shows the need to reform Alabama's income tax. Currently, families of four that make as little as 46-hundred dollars a year must still pay taxes. Forrister says a bill by Representative John Knight would raise the income threshold to about 22-thousand dollars a year by eliminating the state deduction for federal income taxes.
