Lawmakers Consider Income Tax Cuts

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery, AL – Five different plans to cut state income taxes are pending before the state Legislature, but none have been able to win committee approval. One major point of dispute is whether each taxpayer should get a tax cut or whether wealthier taxpayers should pay more to cover tax cuts for low-income workers. However, lawmakers appear to agree that Alabama should end its distinction of having the nation's lowest tax threshold ... where poor families start paying taxes at income levels of only 4-thousand dollar for a family of four. A House committee will continue looking at the tax cut plans Wednesday morning.
