16th Street Baptist Named Historic Landmark

By Alabama Public Radio

Birmingham AL – 16th Street Baptist Church in downtown Birmingham was designated this morning as a national Historic Landmark. The church was founded in 1873 as First Colored Baptist Church, before moving to its current location in 1911. 16th Street Baptist was a key meeting place during the civil rights movement and came into the national spotlight when it was 1963. It was chosen as a national Historic Landmark because it possesses exceptional value in illustrating the heritage of our country. 16th Street Baptist will be in the national spotlight tonight for a different reason when it appears on tonight's episode of the quiz show Jeopardy.
