Montgomery, AL – The state legislature overturned the governor's veto of a bill that revives the legislature's community service grant program. It allows lawmakers to allocate money for special projects in their districts. Critics call the program "pork," but some lawmakers say they use the funds to help local schools. The state Supreme Court ended the practice last year, saying the legislature cannot spend state funds without executive branch control. The new law gets around that ruling by setting up a committee to approve the spending. But it doesn't include the governor, and Riley says that's one reason why he vetoed it.
