Montgomery AL – Almost two years ago the Alabama Environmental Management Commission unanimously voted to hire a person to help establish a special unit that would focus on environmental justice issues. At the time the vote was seen as a step in the right direction ... however, there's still no environmental justice unit at the Alabama Department of Environmental Management. ADEM director Trey Glenn says one of their attorneys had been serving as environmental justice coordinator for at least a year but had to retire last month due to health problems. Glenn said he's now trying to revamp the position and give it its own salary. Glenn says one of the reason for the unit's delay is a lack of funding.
