Prison System Takes Cleanup Proposals

By Alabama Public Radio

Montgomery, AL – The state corrections department will begin accepting proposals this week to clean up sewage that has leaked from eight waste water treatment facilities. The proposal deadline is August ninth. The prison system operates the treatment facilities, and sewage has leaked from them for years. The environmental group Black Warrior Riverkeeper filed a complaint against the state prison system in 2004. The group said one facility had committed more than one-thousand violations of the Clean Water Act since 1999 by discharging sewage into Big Branch and Valley Creek, which is a tributary of the Black Warrior River.
