Clay Bridge Meets Its End

By Alabama Public Radio

Decatur, AL – Scott Bridge Company is scheduled to detonate explosives Wednesday to send part of the C.C. Clay Bridge crashing into the Tennessee River. The explosion will destroy the truss on the north end of the bridge. Automobile traffic on U-S 231 and boat traffic on the river will be stopped a safe distance from the bridge. Some people plan to watch the explosion on Old River Road on the river's south bank in Morgan County. Scott Bridge plans to blast two other sections of the bridge during the next two weeks. The Clay Bridge opened in 1931 and was named for Clement Comer Clay, a Huntsville resident who was governor from 1835 to 1837.
