Smokers Urged to Pocket Their Butts

By Alabama Public Radio

Undated, AL – Cigarette butts are piling up near buildings as smoking is banned from more and more places. Now, dozens of cities across the country, including three in Alabama, are distributing portable ashtrays that allow smokers to place the smoked cigarettes into their pockets. Mobile, Huntsville and Birmingham are among the 50 U-S cities participating in the cigarette litter prevention program.
Cigarette maker Philip Morris is helping fund the campaign. The palm-sized ashtrays have a sliding door with a metal compartment that can store several butts.
