Low Numbers for Hispanic Voters

By Associated Press

Montgomery, AL – Hispanics are a growing part of Alabama's population, but they make up less than 1 percent of the state's voters. According to the secretary of state's office, Alabama has 7,187 registered Hispanic voters. That's three-tenths of one percent of Alabama's nearly two-point-seven (M) million registered voters. Election officials acknowledge the number is likely low because a few county voter registrar offices don't have computers set up to record Hispanic as a type of voter. For instance, Shelby County's computer system only records black, white and other. A Shelby County election official estimates that a majority of the 23-hundred voters in the other category are Hispanic. Alabama counties listing the largest number of Hispanic voters are: Madison with 1,340; Jefferson with 1,051; and Montgomery with 478.
