Riley's Tax Cut Plan Gets Bigger

By Associated Press

Montgomery, AL – The income tax cuts proposed by Governor Riley in his re-election platform are more than three times as large as the one approved by the Legislature this year. Riley's income tax cuts for working families and retirees would total 205 (M) million dollars annually if fully implemented in six years. That compares with 60 (M) million dollars in tax cuts the Legislature approved last spring for Alabama's working poor. Riley's other campaign proposals, including school construction, tax credits for businesses, and prison guard pay raises, would push the total price tag of his re-election plan to more than one (B) billion dollars. That price tag comes from the administration's own estimates. The most expensive part of Riley's plan is a 500 (M) million dollar bond issue for school construction projects. The 20-year bond issue would cost a total of 840 (M) million dollars over the life of the bond issue.
