Guntersville considers sales tax increase

By Associated Press

Guntersville, AL – City officials say the additional money is needed to pave streets and go ahead with downtown renovation and a public pier project. Last year, the council had to obtain a two (M) million dollar line of credit to balance its budget.
Mayor Bob Hembree says that with a one-cent sales tax increase the city's taxes would still not equal the sales tax charged in other area towns its size.
Customers now pay seven cents of sales tax on every dollar's worth of goods bought in Guntersville. Of that, four cents goes to the state, two cents to the city and schools get one cent of it.
