Montgomery, AL – Montgomery state Representative Alvin Holmes wants to sit down with the city's police chief and mayor to discuss the recent deaths of three men in police custody. Holmes, in a newspaper interview, said he is not accusing police of any wrongdoing, but said Police Chief Art Baylor and Mayor Bobby Bright should be willing to explain to citizens the circumstances surrounding the deaths. They include the August 27th death of Dwight Washington. He was found dead in his cell at the Montgomery City Jail. Authorities previously said he died from natural causes. On September eighth, 35-year-old Perry Simmons died after he was shocked with a Taser gun and sprayed with a chemical by officers attempting to arrest him. 30-year-old Eddie Charles Ham Junior died Sunday morning after he was subdued with a Taser gun outside Montgomery police headquarters. The Alabama Bureau of Investigation is conducting inquiries into all the deaths.
