Neighbors Oppose Wal-Mart Plan

By Associated Press

Mobile, AL – Some neighbors of a proposed Wal-Mart Supercenter are organizing to stop it. The Supercenter would be located on Airport Boulevard just west of Hillcrest Road, one of Mobile's busiest retail districts. A traffic study says the Wal-Mart will not noticeably worsen congestion on Airport, as long as a traffic signal is added and other signals in the area are coordinated. Bettina Prager lives in a house facing Airport Boulevard in the Willow Brook subdivision. She says Airport Boulevard is too busy and dangerous to support the extra cars that a branch of the world's largest retailer would bring. She says the house next door to her once had a car crash into its kitchen. Prager describes the traffic situation as horrendous. Opponents plan to meet tonight (Monday) at Shaw High School. Mayor Sam Jones is expected to attend that meeting. Meanwhile, the Mobile Planning Commission is scheduled to take up the proposal December 21st.
