Athens, AL – Beginning today (Tuesday), the Athens City Council will require contractors to sign statements saying they are not employing illegal aliens on any city-related projects.
The policy change was approved at yesterday's (Monday) council meeting.
Council President Harold Wales said if a contractor violates the agreement - their contract would be terminated. He said the police department and public works will help enforce the resolution.
A city attorney said its unclear if the council's action would survive a legal challenge because the federal government has sole authority over immigration matters.
