Riley: No Plans to Sell Bryce Hospital

By Associated Press

Montgomery, AL – Governor Riley is responding to speculation about the possible sale of Alabama's old mental hospital to the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.

Riley says there is currently no plan to sell Bryce Hospital to the school. And he says there's no agreement for such a deal.

Riley says he agrees with the position of the Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation, which says it will consider selling Bryce only if such a deal fits into a statewide modernization plan.

Much of the old hospital property is no longer used, and the University of Alabama could use the land for future expansion. Talks on a possible land deal began in late 2005.
