Gee's Bend, AL – Residents in the tiny hamlet of Gee's Bend received good news this week. The state Department of Transportation announced it will continue to manage the Gee's Bend ferry for another three years.
DOT spokesman Tony Harris said state and federal funds will be used to run the ferry.
Meanwhile, Wilcox County officials broke ground yesterday for a new boat terminal that will be built on the Camden side of the Alabama River. The facility will be financed with a $500,000 appropriation from the federal government.
Ferry service was reinstated last September after a 44 year absence.
Gee's Bend is famous for its colorful patchwork quilts that have been featured in museums exhibits nationwide.
